Modern embalming was developed during the Civil War, in order to transport fallen soldiers from the battlefields back home for burial.

Embalming chemicals are a combination of preservatives, disinfectants and other additives used to temporarily prevent decomposition and restore a natural appearance in a deceased person.

The most common of these chemicals is formaldehyde, which is injected directly into the arterial system to preserve bodies for both funeral purposes and in medical research.
