Item description

This unique piece of vintage style medical equipment is known as a Pinard horn. It is a type of stethoscope used to listen to the heart rate of a fetus during pregnancy. It is a hollow horn, made of wood, approximately 6 inches long. It was invented in 1895 by Dr. Adolphe Pinard, a French obstetrician.

Although still used today, this wooden stethoscope makes for a unique addition to any vintage medical collection or curio cabinet. With it’s dark wood finish, it is a piece of medical history. The user holds the wide end of the horn against a pregnant woman’s abdomen, and listens through the other end. This medical instrument was the precursor to todays modern Doppler fetal monitor.

Wooden stethoscope is new and never used, you will receive 1 (one) stethoscope. Measures approx. 6 inches long with a diameter of approx. 1 1/2 inches. (Fetal skeleton model not included.)

I write historical mysteries, and needed a prop for an upcoming speaking engagement. This item is what was used as a stethoscope in the 1800s. It was perfect for my needs, and was shipped promptly.
