Yes, this is the real zombie fungus you’ve seen the documentaries of. And if your not familiar with what this is… it’s wicked! This is a sample of the zombie fungus growing out of a Cicada (Cicadoidia). It is a type parasitic fungus called Cordyceps.(Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis) This is a must have for any Oddities and Curiosities collection.
You can either receive 1 specimen in a glass vial, or 2 specimens and 1 vial. Specimens vary quite a bit. We’ll take the time to pick you the best available and guarantee a quality specimen.
When the fungus infects an insect, it grows through the insect’s body, draining it of nutrients and hijacking its mind. Over the course of a week, it compels the insect to ascend a nearby plant and stops it when it finds an area precisely the right temperature and humidity for the fungus to grow. It then forces the insect to permanently lock down onto the plant. Eventually, it sends a long stalk through the insects head, growing into a bulbous capsule full of spores.
A really nice, no hassle experience all around. I'm a mycologist and needed a cordyceps display for an outreach event for high schoolers. The display is great, well packed, and arrived fast.
Great packaging, both specimens were amazing and great addition to my collection of fungus.
